Go to settings, general, accessibility, and then turn on assistive touch. This will allow an icon to appear in the top left corner of the screen that, when pressed, expands and gives you the ability to activate the home button on the screen. Very clever. A nice temporary solution until that $3 button and pentalobe screw driver arrive from eBay. Risk-free solution, unlike applying WD-40. Also, on my iPhone 4S, the icon is actually in the bottom right corner.
