Do You Know What's In Your Sushi?
Interesting article from Wired Science: Sushi DNA Tests Reveal Fraud
Here’s an excerpt:
The team of researchers from Columbia University and the American Museum of Natural History ordered tuna from 31 sushi restaurants and then used genetic tests to determine the species of fishes in those dishes. More than half of those eateries misrepresented, or couldn’t clarify the type of fish they were mongering. Several were selling endangered southern bluefin tuna.

Plate of assorted meats and cheeses with homemade mustard at Wined Up, the wine bar upstairs from Punch Restaurant in NYC.
Meats from left to right:
- Wild Boar Terrine (homemade)
- Speck (smoked prosciutto)
- Rabbit Sausage (homemade)
Cheeses from left to right:
- Leónora (pasteurized goat from León, Spain)
- La Tur (pasteurized cow, goat and sheep from Piedmont Italy)
- Pyrénées Brebis (pasteurized sheep from Pays Basque, France)
To accompany this meal, I had a glass of a 2004 Les Creisses Syrah blend from the Languedoc region in France.
Earlier that day, I was at the Big Apple BBQ with my friends Niteesha, Leena and Sid (Leena’s husband). Niteesha and I waited in one of the longest lines for Baker’s Ribs, while Leena and Sid got us some pulled pork sandwiches (not sure which stand). It was drizzling while we were in line, and when we finally sat down to eat, it came pouring down. When we were done licking our fingers, we decided it was time to seek shelter.
We let Niteesha - the resident foodie - lead the way. She wanted to take us straight to Wined Up, but they didn’t open until 5pm, so we sat downstairs at Punch Restaurant and enjoyed some sweet potato fries and a bottle of 2007 Decero Malbec from the Remolinos Vineyard in Mendoza, Argentina.
Check out my set on Flickr for more photos from Punch and Wined Up. I’m still getting used to my Nikon D90 (first DSLR) and 50mm lens, so please excuse the not-so-sharp photos.

Scallops with orange and organic roasted red pepper and tomato soup
Ingredients:
- Raw sea scallops (I got mine frozen from Costco)
- Organic Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato Soup from Pacific Natural Foods
- 1 orange
- mediterranean salt
- black pepper
- finely chopped fresh italian parsley (a small handful)
- extra virgin olive oil
Rinse the scallops and pat dry. Season with cracked salt and pepper, and drizzle with olive oil. Let rest for a few minutes.
While you’re heating the soup, heat a nonstick pan over medium-high heat, then cook the scallops for about 2 minutes per side. Towards the end, squeeze in some juice from the orange. When done, sprinkle with parsley.
Plate, serve and enjoy this easy, quick and healthy meal!
(sorry about the photo quality. it didn’t come out as well as I wanted.)
Foodies in DC Area: Join TastePost!
This post is related to the previous one, where I mentioned bon appétit magazine. When I got home that day, I was puzzled to see the magazine in my mailbox, but then I remembered that a subscription was included with my TastePost membership. For those of you in the DC area, I highly recommend joining TastePost. It’s only $20 per year, and includes many benefits and discounts. I joined about a month ago to go to their Wine & Cheese tasting event, which was $40 for non-members, but only $10 for members and up to 3 of their guests. So, instead of paying $80 for me and my date, I paid $40, including the membership, which I will most definitely take advantage of throughout the year. You can also follow @tastepost on Twitter to find out about exclusive offers and events.
Recipes in 140 characters or less
Maureen Evans (@cookbook) has been offering short recipes on Twitter since 2007. I don’t remember where I first read about this, but here’s a nice NYTimes.com article that just popped up in my feed reader: The Challenge of Recipes on Twitter.
BakerTweet is an ingenious device that allows bakers to announce which treats have just come out of the oven by sending messages to Twitter wirelessly. BakerTweet was developed by Poke using the Arduino technology.
The first BakerTweet device has been installed at the Albion Cafe on Boundary Street in Shoreditch, London. To find out what’s cooking, follow @albionsoven on Twitter. Something seems wrong though: out of the 42 supposed updates, only 4 from today are visible, and 3 of them are about “lovely loaves.”
